On Friday, September 28th, the moment we've all been waiting for came to fruition. The highly anticipated Carter V is finally ours! This album has been something like an urban legend to Wayne fans everywhere, we've heard secondhand stories about it, but we needed to have it in our own hands before we could believe in its existence. While Wayne admitted he has enough tracks recorded for this album AND two more albums, He and Maine decided it'd be best to cut Tha Carter V down to 23 tracks. Quick-witted lyricism, pristine beat selection, & features from some of hip hop's finest makes this album quintessential Weezy F.
Accoring to Billboard, The Carter V has debuted at number 1 on the top 200 list, making it Wayne's fourth number 1 album. It has also charted as the third biggest debut of 2018 (behind Scorpion and Astroworld), while also managing to have the second largest streaming week ever for an album (coming in second to Scorpion). In an interview on CRWN with Elliot Wilson, Weezy admitted he hasn't even heard the album himself and a lot of these tracks are anywhere from 4-7 years old. Wayne continued that he wanted to release the story he started and only switched a few lines that were time specific to the year it was recorded. Proof that Wayne truly makes timeless music.
My favorite part about the album is the production team's use of samples. If you know me, you know i LOVE researching where producers got their inspiration from. Below I listed the tracks that use samples and where the samples originated from:
Track 3: "Dedicate"- sample: "Dedication" off joint album with 2Chainz "Collegrove"
(prod. by Roc & Mayne)
Track 4: "Uproar"- sample: "Special Delivery" by G.Dep
(prod. by Swizz Beatz & Avenue)
Track 13: "Dope Niggaz"- sample: "XXplosive" by Dr. Dre (originally a sample from Soul Mann & The Brothers "Bumpy's Lament")
(prod. by Kamo & R!o)
Track 18: "Demon"- sample: "Lord Hold Me in Your Arms" by The Crowns of Glory
(prod. by Cool & Dre & 808-Ray)
Track 19: "Mess"- sample: "Home" by K-pop artist Jang Hyun Seung
(prod. by Infamous)
Track 20: "Dope New Gospel"- sample: "Never Would Have Made It" by Marvin Sapp
(prod. by R!o & Kamo)
Track 23: "Let It All Work Out"- sample: "Indecision" by Sampha
(prod. by Reefa, Jordan, & Myles William)
While I don't think C5 is album of the year, it is a great album. Wayne delivered in true Wayne fashion. His lyricism was never slacking, his beat selection was hard, and Mack Maine did an incredible job of organizing the album so that it flowed as the story that Wayne intended it to be.
