It can be argued that 2017 was the busiest year for producer Metro Boomin, he dropped three solid projects with Nav, Big Sean, and Offset & 21 Savage, produced numerous other singles, all while touring as well. But at the beginning of 2018 we weren't sure if we would ever hear another Boomin beat again, his socials suggested he'd be retiring. Fast forward to last Friday (Nov 2.) when Metro decided to bless us all with his first full length project of 2018, Not All Heroes Wear Capes. This project does not lack on the Travis Scott and 21 Savage tracks, we get an abundance of them. But we also get some interesting features from a few other favorites: Gucci, Swae Lee, J Balvin, Kodak Black, and Young Thug. Billboard is projecting that Not All Heroes Wear Capes is headed to hit number one on the Billboard 200 list. This would not be Metro's first time in the Top 10. Double or Nothing featuring Big Sean hit #6 last year, while Without Warning featuring Offset and 21 Savage came in at #4. BUT, this would be his first time claiming the #1 spot. (Update as of Nov 17th: Not All Heroes Wear Capes officially holds the #1 spot on the Billboard Top 200 Albums)
While Metro produced on every one of these tracks, he didn't do it all alone, a few heavy hitter producers contributed as well: Tay Keith, Allen Ritter, Prince 85, Dre Moon, Milan Beker, & Southside. Metro did a great job of putting together a stellar team to ensure his beats were A1. In a time where gibberish rappers are flourishing, pristine production matters that much more. There's a few samples I figured I'd share with y'all, if you have a chance to listen to the original tracks definitely do so!
Track #1: "10AM/Save The World- sample: "Save the World" by The Loving Sisters (1974)
Track #2: "OverDue"- sample: "Annie" (Berlin Breakdown Version) by Anthonio (2009)
Track #6: "10 Freaky Girls"- sample: "Are You the Woman" by Kashif feat. Whitney Houston (1984)
Track #10: "Borrowed Love"- sample: "After Laughter (Comes Tears)" by Wendy Rene (1964)
Track #12: "No More"- sample: "In the Ghetto / God Save the World" by 24-Carat Black (1973)
I was really surprised with how much I liked this album right off the bat. It not only showcased how much Metro has matured in his craft, but we get a true taste for how versatile he is with tracks like "Only You" to ones like "No More." My only bone to pick about this album is that Future and Big Sean are noticeably absent; there was a track or two that I would've liked to have heard with a Sean verse or Future adlibs. Overall, this project is very well orchestrated, flawlessly cohesive, and an easy play through. Check my track-by-track breakdown below!
